An Eco-analysis of the Multimodal Effects in China's EFL Education
XIAO Hao-zhang, YANG Ying-ying
2018, 34(6): 1-9.
Abstract(383) PDF(16)
Abstract:
This article explores the comprehensive impact of multimodal classroom teaching on second language learning in China through meta-analysis.We searched and collected 33 quantitative research papers published in core journals of foreign languages from 2004 to 2018,with a total sample size of 4410 and 39 independent studies.By a matching analysis of Gu Yueguo's(2007) agent-based modeling language(AML) construct and experimental effects of modalities, namely the independent variables and dependent variables and p values, the results show that:(1) the present domestic research on multimodal teaching mainly involves the four skills, viz.listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as the effects on students'psychological and learning performance.Among them, the study of high-level thinking learning is rare.(2) The meta-analysis reveals the positive and negative effects of multimodality, and the biggest divergence lies in the study of cognitive load in the process of receiving information of multimodality. This indicates the necessity of further research and ecological classroom construction in this field.
Marxism as Reflected in the Hallidayan Approach to Ecolinguistics
LIU Yan, YU Hui
2018, 34(6): 10-17.
Abstract(327) PDF(22)
Abstract:
Ecolinguistics addresses the relationship between language and ecology. Two major approaches have been identified,i.e.Haugenian Approach and Hallidayan Approach. The present study aims to uncover the inheritance and development of Marxist views on language and ecology by the Hallidayan Approach.Among the views are the social nature of language, the relationship between language, matter and consciousness, and linguistic constructivism.Influenced by the “two reconciliations”of Marxist views on ecology, the Hallidayan Approach is also critical of capitalism, which is by nature anti-ecological.The task of a Hallidayan ecolinguist is therefore to uncover“how our ways of meaning affect the impact we have on the environment”.

LI Qian
2018, 34(6): 18-26.
Abstract(315) PDF(12)
Abstract:
Over the past forty years, ecolinguistics have made steady progress and preliminarily yielded various kinds of theoretical resources and important achievement, yet it still lacks systematic integration as an independent subject. This study will make an attempt to conduct a comprehensive integration study on the development of Chinese and Western ecolinguistics from the diachronic perspective.By dividing and systematizing important development phases, this study finds their limitations and drawbacks respectively.Meanwhile,it tries to seek for specific means and approaches to conduct an integrative study of Chinese and Western ecolinguistics. It also provides an extensive theoretical framework and a concrete practical reference,so as to realize communication in the field of ecolinguistics, and promote theoretical and methodologies constructions of China and Western countries, advancing integrated and diversified development of ecolinguistics.

Abstract(374) PDF(20)
Abstract:
Different from traditional grammar,Green grammar criticizes non-ecological phenomena existing in certain language system, and attempts to construct expressions which are of harmonious relationship with ecology. This paper, based on COCA,conducted an analysis of the keyword OIL by examining its classifier collocates. The result shows(1)that the most frequent collocate of OIL is PRICE,indicating that price of oil plays an important role in human experience;(2) that PRICE OF OIL occurs with the most frequency in SPOK corpus of COCA,indicating that social context plays a determining role in discourse meanings.Unsteady political structure in the world leads money ideology takes the first place of human life instead of the ultimate relationship within the ecosystem.Only certain ultimate relationship is expressed unambiguously, could such nonecological behaviors be improved to promote ecological harmoniousness.

LIU Jia-huan, GAO Ran
2018, 34(6): 43-49.
Abstract(407) PDF(15)
Abstract:
This paper introduces the series of lectures about ecolinguistics held by National Research Centre for Foreign Language Education, Beijing Foreign Studies University from October 9 to October 24, 2018.Professor Andrew Goatly from Lingnan University and Professor Stephen Cowley from University of Southern Denmark give ten lectures mainly from three perspectives:the diversified development trend, multidiscipline conflation and the study of ecological discourse analysis. In the lectures,it is shown that the multidiscipline conflation is the manifestation of transdisciplinarity and gives the direction of the diversified development of ecolinguistics.By prospecting the future of ecolinguistics, the lectures conform to the trend of discipline development and reflect some new thinking of ecolinguists.

A Review of the Development of Construction Grammar Studies: A Visualized Analysis Based on Cite Space
FAN Zhen-qiang, GUO Ya-xin
2018, 34(6): 56-63.
Abstract(429) PDF(14)
Abstract:
Using information visualizing technology, i.e.CiteSpaceV, we analyze seminal journal articles pertaining to construction grammar in the Web of Science(WOS) from 2008 to 2018.The results show that since 2008, construction grammar has been in the limelight and is developing rapidly; many high-yield authors have emerged. The “hot” research topics focus on construction and grammar, English and language, and usage and acquisition. The research frontier covers 12 clusters, including grammaticalization, argument structure, action recognition, cognitive grammar and construction. With data from CiteSpace, some suggestions for the future study of construction grammar are proposed.

Checks and Balances and the “Vetocracy” Dilemma of American Democracy: A Study of American Democratic Efficiency from the Perspective of Institutional Costs
LIU Xiao-zhou
2018, 34(6): 87-94.
Abstract(969) PDF(19)
Abstract:
A system of checks and balances is the basic institutional arrangement of American democratic politics. It plays an important role in preventing political tyranny, balancing diversified interests and enhancing decision-making prudence. However, this institutional arrangement requires sacrificing decision-making efficiency. In recent years, the views of the two major political parties—the Democrats and the Republicans—have become polarized. The presidency and the two houses of Congress are often controlled by different parties. The antagonism between the political parties has resulted in a “vetocracy.” The benefits of the American government's decentralized system have decreased, while the costs have risen remarkably. This has caused the operation of American democracy and state governance to be negatively impacted. To solve this problem,in theory,we can adopt the idea of reducing the opposition of the political parties without touching the institutional arrangement of checks and balances. We also can adopt the institutional reform paths of adjusting the legislative checks and balances between the U.S.Senate,the House of Representatives and the President, or changing the presidential system to a parliamentary system. In reality, the possibility of changing the institutional arrangement of checks and balances is very unlikely-unless institutional costs rise to a point that American society cannot afford.

The Legal Expression of the“Three Rights Separation” of Rural Homesteads
YUE Hong-qiang, ZHANG Gang
2018, 34(6): 103-110.
Abstract(478) PDF(210)
Abstract:
The “three rights separation” policy is a major institutional innovation in China’s adjustment of the relationship between farmers and land.It is necessary to use scientific legal ideas and theories to clarify the legal connotation of policies and achieve full conversion from policy language to legal norms. In the rural revitalization strategy, the three rights separation references the three rural reforms regarding agricultural land,namely:1) the re-development of agricultural production methods and land marketization, 2) the relationship reconstruction between rural collective economic organizations and grassroots autonomous organizations and 3)peasant identity interest and self-liberation.Through an analysis of nowadays viewpoints of the three rights separation of the homestead—the legal structure of the three rights—separation of the homestead is expressed as“the collective ownership of the homestead—the homestead land use rights—the qualification rights of the homestead.” The qualification rights of the homestead are based on the right to identity and include the compound rights of the content of the property rights. In future civil code, property rights should adhere to the collective ownership of rural land; stipulate the collective ownership of rural land as the total relationship; revise the system norms that refine the change of membership rights; and establish a supporting system for the right of homestead and the right to use the homestead.
