  • John O'Keeffe/Charles Farley's Aladdin; or, The Wonderful Lamp (1813)not only made the story of Aladdin and the magic lamp in The Arabian Nights successfully come to the London stage but also had a significant influence on subsequent adapted plays based on the same story. What was the success and influence of Aladdin; or, The Wonderful Lamp (1813)。The following conclusions could be drawn through the method of historicism. This play had three characteristics that had made it popular:first, the spectacular display of Chinoiserie; second, Joseph Grimaldi's comic performance; third, the upholding of the companionate marriage that conformed to social progress. Its influence was manifested at least in the following two aspects.Firstly, Henry Byron's Aladdin, or, The Wonderful Scamp! (1861)inherited the three characteristics of Aladdin; or, The Wonderful Lamp (1813).Secondly, Pollock Toy Theater used the abridged edition of Aladdin; or, The Wonderful Lamp(1813)as its script.
