  • Since its introduction to the domain of cognitive linguistics as the direct philosophical basis of cognitive linguistics, embodied realism has been a topic full of controversies and is therefore faced with challenges. Based on the discussion of both its arising and philosophical stand, as well as the review of the theoretical criticisms concerning about embodied realism, the corresponding responses to those criticisms and the controversies evoked on embodied realism, this paper indicates out the theoretical challenges faced with embodied realism at the level of theory construction. Although there is a long way to go before western analytical philosophy will be taken over by embodied realism as the mainstream philosophical theory, embodied realism is undoubtedly a theory based on sound theoretical presupposition and reliable empirical evidence. Also, embodied realism is a valid philosophical theory of meaning, which offers a sound explanation of the embodied origin of reason and meaning.
