A Comprehensive Review of Studies on Modality in Chinese

  • Since the 1980s, researchers at home and abroad have conducted systematic and relatively comprehensive studies on the modality in Chinese. However, there are still some problems in such studies. For one thing, the existing contributions to modality in Chinese focus more on the traditional description of semantic and syntactic features and pragmatic functions of modal expressions, and less on the interpretation of modal meanings from the perspectives of cognitive linguistics, formal linguistics, or functional linguistics. For another, researchers still hold divergent views on the definition and classification of modality, on the relationship between mood and modality, and the identification of modal verbs. It is hoped that future studies on the modality in Chinese will be conducted from different perspectives, in greater depth, and with advanced research methods.
