Identity Construction of Young Medical Workers under the Epidemic

  • In order to enrich linguistic study under the epidemic and longitudinal analysis of identity construction, this thesis attempts to figure out diachronic change in identity construction of young medical workers since the outbreak of the epidemic, based upon Attitude system in Appraisal Theory. It shows that the news from the people.cn website construct three identities sequentially, namely brave and responsible backbone model, patriotic and conscientious “epidemic fighter”, and honourable hero of people. The Attitude resources used for constructing the three identities vary significantly. The former two identities are constructed mainly by intensive use of Tenacity resources, while the latter both Judgment resources and Appreciation resources. Additionally, by using Propriety and Capacity together, the first identity is constructed; the second identity, by contrast, is constructed by using Veracity along with Capacity.
