A Contrastive Study of Word-formation in Noun Reduplication between Chinese and English
SONG Ju-lei
2019, 35(5): 1-8.
Abstract(293) PDF(7)
Abstract:
Although noun reduplication is a common phenomenon both in Chinese and English,it differs in many ways. This paper makes a comprehensive contrast between the Chinese and English reduplicative forms by the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. It finds out that total reduplication is more used in Chinese while partial reduplication in English, and no means of connection are adopted in Chinese word-formation while hyphens are often used in English.Through the contrastive analysis of the lexical means, vocabulary forms, transformations and transpositions between Chinese and English reduplication by reclassifying them,it explores the essential differences behind it.The results show that the Chinese noun reduplication reflects the traits of spatiality—chunkiness, elasticity and reversibility, while English reflects the traits of linearity— connectedness, adhesion and irreversibility.
Analytical Methods,Assumptions,Goals and Principles of English Transitivity: Taking “The earthquake destroyed the city” as an Example
ZHOU Wen-juan
2019, 35(5): 9-16.
Abstract(332) PDF(4)
Abstract:
Various strands of English grammar adopt different methods in analyzing English transitivity, and thus reflect distinctive assumptions, goals, and principles.Specifically, modern traditional grammar, structural grammar, and transformativegenerative grammar focus on the forms of English transitivity; while Sydney grammar,Cardiff grammar, and ecological grammar take both forms and the meanings as the first priority. It is maintained that different strands of English grammar learn from each other, which can offer significant insights for the construction of an analytical framework of Chinese transitivity within the framework of ecological grammar,in the context of disciplinary integration and development.

On the Essence, the Feature and the Relationship of the Subjectivity and the Emphasis in the Utterance
LU Ying
2019, 35(5): 26-37.
Abstract(373) PDF(5)
Abstract:
Language is not only a tool to convey objective propositions, but also a tool used by utterers to convey subjectivity.Firstly, the utterer's awareness of the proposition, the attitude towards the event, and the position on discourse form a subjective statement. Moreover, when the subjectivity of the utterer endows certain parts of the utterance and gain prominent perception,it takes the form of emphasis in the utterance.Secondly, from the perspectives of semantics, syntax and pragmatics,we can explore the essence of subjectivity and emphasis expression in the utterance.Finally,one-way emphasis implies subjectivity, and emphasis is a form of subjectivity, while subjectivity in connection with the concept of advantage and freedom in language does not always express the emphasis.

Multi-tasking Value Sphere of Chinese Youths: A Classical Grounded Theory Research on Multi-tasking Behavior and Logic
Jhony Choon Yeong Ng, XU Lu-xi, TAN Qing-mei
2019, 35(5): 46-56.
Abstract(317) PDF(3)
Abstract:
The stance adopted by the multi-tasking literature believes that multi-tasking inclination has positive influences on organization, and the ability to multi-task is also valued by the global market. These phenomenon contradict the traditional values of Chinese on one should “focus on what one is doing”.Adopting a classical grounded theory approach,we study the multitasking perception and behavior of college students and their parents. The findings of our research make important contributions and amendments to the literature on multi-tasking behavior.First, the multi-tasking behavior decision logic that we found has filled the gap in the current literature on the formation mechanism of multi-tasking behavior.Second, based on our findings,we first introduce the concept of“temporal value sphere”,and found the existence of sub-temporal value spheres even in the context of one national culture.Third,we find that most of the multi-tasking researches conducted in China are based on the translation of foreign literature written by scholars from the past, and the opinions laid in the literature are not representative of the reality of China. Our proposition on the co-existence of multiple temporal value spheres has challenged the opinions of foreign literature, and it correctes the misunderstandings that the mainstream foreign literature has on China's temporal culture.Hence,we urge Chinese scholars to conduct researches with Chinese characteristics that are based on the actual circumstances of China.

2019, 35(5): 63-69.
Abstract(201) PDF(4)
Abstract:
Constructing the evaluation indicator system of college teachers' engineering expertise scientifically is not only related to the practical path of the development of emerging engineering teachers, but also can effectively improve the quality of engineering education personnel training. From the perspective of embeddedness theory, teachers' engineering expertise is influenced by four dimensions of the teacher individual cognition, students' engineering quality, universities' education goal of engineering and social demand of engineering. The correlation of the four dimensions is both foundation of interpretation model of teachers' engineering expertise and the basic index of the evaluation of teachers' engineering expertise.Based on the the analysis of the embedded elements of teachers' engineering expertise,we construct the target layer, criterion layer and index layer of evaluation indicator system of college teachers' engineering expertise.

“Out of Control” and “No Mind about Control”: Towards a Partnership Relationship between Human and Machine
TAO Xiao, CHEN Shi-dan
2019, 35(5): 70-77.
Abstract(296) PDF(3)
Abstract:
The ground-breaking advancing of artificial intelligence has echoed the prophecy of Kevin Kelly that machine will go“out of control” of humans in its autonomous development, incurring humans' fear to be enslaved or destroyed by the machine.Based on Derrida's deconstruction, the wisdom of“no mind about control” mentioned by Kevin Kelly, and human-machine cooperation or symbiosis and coevolution proposed by other scholars, through the analysis of how the out-of-control development of the machine decomposes the traditional human-machine binary opposition and the definition of the subject, the paper aims to point out that against the backdrop of the posthuman era in which the boundary between the real and the simulacrum is effaced and the definition of“human” is constantly being refreshed, the traditional binary oppositional view of human and machine is out of mode and will bring about new relationship crises.Concerning this, humans need to get out of the mentality to regard the machine as the object and the other, turn to embrace the variant and dynamic postmodern subjects,as well as to transit from the centered control by the single subject—the humans—to a partnership relationship between human and machine featured by coevolution and co-control.Only in this way can a harmonious human-machine interaction be maintained, thus in the end melting the humans' fear towards the out-of-control development of the machine.

2019, 35(5): 78-87.
Abstract(275) PDF(3)
Abstract:
In just a few years, gene editing technology has developed rapidly, and its application has also sprung up.However, due to the potential risks of this technology,it has caused deep concern about its improper application or deviant behavior. It is also urgent to discuss the regulation of gene editing technology. At present, the regulation of genetic editing technology has been carried out from the ethical, legal and institutional levels, and has formed three paths:unrestricted control mode, strict control mode and limited permission control mode. However, the current three regulatory paths have the problem of choice between the conceptual level and the realistic operational level. That is,how to maintain the tension in the scientific development and the deviance regulation is facing great challenges, and it needs to be reflected and discussed from the aspects of cognition and society.

The Moral Orientation of the Supervision System in Ancient China
XUE Xiao-jian, ZHANG Fu-li
2019, 35(5): 88-97.
Abstract(263) PDF(2)
Abstract:
The supervision system initiated by the Qin Dynasty has become an important feature of the centralized system, which has a far-reaching impact on future generations. However, the value orientation of the Qin system is to maximize the benefits. The vacancy of the Qin system in the field of ultimate value leaves room for the future generations' moral orientation of the supervision system.Since the Western Han Dynasty, the operation of the supervision system not only followed the principle of“politics”,but also had the meaning of“teaching”.The supervisory system in Song Dynasty made a great breakthrough in Sui and Tang Dynasty, and the implementation of the integration of Tai Jian and Tang Jian became a catalyst for the party's struggle. The supervisory officials represented by the Six Sections in Ming Dynasty were inferior and weighted, and the major political disturbances in the “Gou Si Jing Jian” incident showed the imbalance between “government” and “education” in the supervisory system in Ming Dynasty.Institution once fell into alienation supervision centered on compact monologue, which was rooted in the single-line governance pattern of monarchy totalitarianism.“Politics” and “education” have become the most important contents in the value orientation of Chinese traditional supervisory system. The evolution of the traditional supervisory system also reflects the extremely delicate and complicated relationship between them.

Learning,Criticism and Extension: On Eagleton's Criticism of Raymond Williams'Cultural View
WANG Wei
2019, 35(5): 106-111.
Abstract(243) PDF(5)
Abstract:
Eagleton has both criticized and agreed with Raymond Williams' view of culture, and has not changed his attitude from early negation to later affirmation. On the one hand,Eagleton criticized Williams' cultural outlook for being too broad and ignoring ideological and cultural struggles, with many drawbacks such as populism, empiricism and political incrementalism. Most of Eagleton's criticisms were directly or indirectly answered, reflected and corrected by Williams. On the other hand,Eagleton absorbed the theoretical nutrition of Williams' cultural view and took over the banner of socialist common culture. It is worth noting that these criticisms and affirmative opinions are both extended and fermented implicitly or explicitly in Eagleton's research of postmodernism, which is helpful to better grasp the context and consistency of Eagleton's cultural view.

Consumption and Being Consumed: Women in the Western-style Dining Space of the Republic of China
YIN Si-yang
2019, 35(5): 112-118.
Abstract(250) PDF(2)
Abstract:
During the 1920s and 1930s,women in western restaurants, cafes and other western dining places were either female customers pursuing fashion or waitresses with professional status. The appearance of female customers and hostesses is the symbol of women entering the public space of society. However, under the influence of urban consumption culture and patriarchal consciousness, they become the objects of consumption and have to bear the moral ridicule and criticism of the patriarchal society. The situation of women in western-style dining places reflects the relationship between gender and power in urban consumption space, and also reveals a paradox in the life changes of women in the republic of China:the process of women entering society is also the process of them becoming consumer goods. This situation shows the difficulty in the process of "social human" of women in modern China.
