A Contrastive Study of the Logico-semantic Relations and Their Representations between English and Chinese Clauses
HE Wei, LIU Jia-huan
2019, 35(2): 1-17.
Abstract(294) PDF(4)
Abstract:
This research contrasts the logico-semantic relations between English and Chinese clauses in the dimensions of types and representations of logico-semantic relations in order to reveal the differences between English and Chinese people in terms of cognition. The result shows that in terms of types of logico-semantic relations, in English the enhancement type is the most frequently used while in Chinese the extension type is the most frequently employed. And in English, the logico-semantic relations are often indicated by boundary markers while in Chinese, they are often implied by the semantic meanings between clauses. As for the representation of enhancement, reasons or conditions come after results in English while it is the other way round in Chinese. And as for the representation of extension, boundary markers play an important role in English, but temporal sequence is significant in Chinese. These differences can be attributed to different cognition and psychology between western and Chinese people.Western people lay emphasis on logical reasoning while Chinese on perception and intuition.
A Study of the Trait of Temporality in isiZulu—By Contrasting and Comparing with Chinese and English
MA Xiu-jie, WANG Wen-bin
2019, 35(2): 18-24.
Abstract(267) PDF(1)
Abstract:
Both time and space are involved in all events. As the tool of communicating and thinking, human languages have temporality and spatiality. However, these two traits are different from language to language. While some languages are temporality-prominent, others are spatiality-prominent.By contrasting and comparing with Chinese and English, this paper examines the verb and tense in isiZulu. It shows that in isiZulu the verb plays a key role in word-formation, i.e.the verb stem is the basis, from which a large number of nouns are derived.Grammatical categories are normally attached to the verb in the syntactic structure.Besides, IsiZulu has a large number of tenses and aspects, which are syntactically compulsory. In addition, isiZulu has the so-called deficient verbs which play an important part in encoding the temporal relations of events. All of these traits can lead us to conclude that isiZulu is a temporality-prominent language.
Animacy Effect on Relative Clause Processing in Elderly Individuals
LIU Xin-miao
2019, 35(2): 25-31.
Abstract(280) PDF(0)
Abstract:
Animacy provides important lexical semantic cues for relative clause processing.Yet individuals' ability to use animacy cues may change with advancing age.In this study, comparison was made between younger and older adults in animacy effect on relative clause processing through a self-paced reading task.Mandarin relative clauses were used as the experimental materials and the animacy of RC objects(animate, inanimate) and main clause subjects(animate, inanimate) were manipulated. The results suggest that for older adults, the animacy of RC objects and main clause subjects had no significant effect on the reading times in online processing. For younger adults, the relative clauses with inanimate main clause subjects were more difficult to process than those with animate main subjects. The finding indicates that there is an age-related decline in the ability to utilize animacy cues in sentence processing. The findings supported the Capacity Constrained Comprehension Theory.
The Usage of “-de” in Modern Times: A Perspective of Language Contact between Chinese and Japanese
YANG Chao-shi
2019, 35(2): 32-39.
Abstract(311) PDF(7)
Abstract:
The evolution of the usage of “-de” is often thought of as a result of the development of the vernacular, and gradually evolved into modern Chinese usage. It is important to clarify whether the modern “-de” has changed, and if it has changed, what is the reason for this evolution. This paper uses the method of language contact theory to investigate and prove the evolution of the usage “-de” in modern times. It shows that such usages and structures in the Chinese language is relatively new and could have been the result of the influence of modern Japanese. This new language phenomenon shows that Chinese and Japanese language contact not only stays in the “loanword” level, it also involves word formation and grammar level.
A Probe into the Form and Function of Chinese and Japanese Kinship Terms from the Perspective of Viewpoint
YANG Yu-ling
2019, 35(2): 40-46.
Abstract(183) PDF(0)
Abstract:
The present study focuses on the contrastive usage, function and cognitive viewpoint of the different forms of kinship terms between Japanese and Chinese with regard to self-directing, addressee directing and reference directing. It is found that the Chinese viewpoint is mainly related to the language form, but has little to do with the pragmatic context. The bare noun reflects a borrowable viewpoint, the direct combination form has a parallel viewpoint, and the form with ‘de’implies an intersecting viewpoint. However, the Japanese viewpoint is related to the pragmatic context, but not to the language form. The self-directing and addressee directing are borrowable viewpoints, while the reference directing is an intersecting viewpoint. The cognitive motivation of viewpoint selection is subjectivity and intersubjectivity. The direct combination form of self-directing and addressee directing shows significant intersubjectivity in Chinese. The honorific expression in Japanese is a marked form of intersubjectivity, which is most obvious in reference directing.
A Comparative Analysis of Shijun Wei's New Hall in Yongzhou and Its English Version from the Perspective of Topic Chain

2019, 35(2): 47-52.
Abstract(242) PDF(1)
Abstract:
The cohesion and coherence of discourse are vital not only in the construction of discourse, but also in the translation of discourse.Topic chain is a unifying mechanism in constructing cohesion and coherence.Hence based on the difference of Subject, Topic and Topic Chain between Chinese and English, this paper makes a comparative analysis of Shijun Wei's New Hall in Yongzhou and its English version(translated by Luo Jingguo). The research shows that the English version is almost equivalent to the original text, but the cohesion in Topic Chain need to be modified in order to ensure the cohesion and coherence of the translated text, making the English version more faithful to the original one. Thus, the translation quality can be improved.
A Funtional Study of Specialized Development of Journals of Humanities and Social Sciences in Higher Institutions
GAO Sheng-wen
2019, 35(2): 53-58.
Abstract(192) PDF(0)
Abstract:
The debate on the comprehensive and specialized development of journals of humanities and social sciences in higher institutions is still one of the hot issues in the academia. This paper probes into the inevitability, gradual evolution, feasibility and restriction factors of the specialized and the comprehensive development of journals of humanities and social sciences in higer institutions from the two dimensions of systemic-functional linguistics:realization and instantiation. The paper argues that the specialized development of the journals is inevitable, but the development of the journals forms a cline. The development of the journals follows the route of synthesis, specialty, re-synthesis, re-specialty, and so on.At a certain stage of development, the comprehensive development of the journals has its rationality. In order to be successful, the specialized development of the journals must first be supported by the host universities in terms of policy, manpower, funds, academic resources, editorial staff and so on.It also needs the support of the departments in charge in terms of specific management system and operation mechanism. The specialized development of the journals must abide by the correct political direction, adhere to the socialism core values, and fully reflect the spirit of the times.

2019, 35(2): 59-66.
Abstract(257) PDF(1)
Abstract:
After reform and opening, with the loosening of the household registration management system and the "push-pull" forces between urban and rural areas, a large number of migrant population has emerged. The migrant workers have become the main groups in the eastern coastal area.As a result, in some villages, the number of the migrant population has already exceeded the local household. This trend has caused a special social phenomenon called "population inverted villages", which bring many social problems.Taking H city as an example, the article points out that these population inverted villages generally have difficulties in management system, public security maintenance, public resources allocation, living environment optimization, public affairs participation and so on.It is necessary to perfect the information management, and implement collaborative, integrated and regulatory management.
Automated Storage Method for Big Data in Periodical Classification Based on Group Collaboration and Intelligent Clustering
ZHANG Li-ping
2019, 35(2): 67-72.
Abstract(175) PDF(0)
Abstract:
The traditional method of automating the storage of big data on periodicals cannot guarantee accuracy and rationality in the process of decomposition.A merging strategy is unreasonable, leads to deviations in the process of optimization, and greatly reduces the efficiency of the classification and storage of the periodicals. To solve this problem, we propose a new method of automating the storage based on swarm collaborative intelligence clustering.First, we determine the initial structure of a radial basis function neural network.Next, we obtaine the hidden node group by calculating the diameter of its base through a sample distribution and regarde it as the initial set.The highest classification storage accuracy, the largest F-measure, and the highest similarity of journal features are taken as objective functions, and weighted sums are used as fitness functions. In the process of solving, we combine a distribution estimation algorithm and a genetic algorithm to produce new individuals through simulated annealing and realized intelligent clustering by group cooperation. The optimal individual is obtained by evolution, and the final elite set is obtained. The periodical classification of big data is automatically stored by the obtained radial basis neural network.Experimental results show that the proposed method has strong storage performance.

Abstract(307) PDF(6)
Abstract:
As one of the important British romantic poets, Shelley was not only a great poet, but also an important theorist of poetry. His poetics occupied an important position in the history of Western Ideas, which affected a lot of poets of the early 20th century Chinese, Hsu Chih-mo was one of them.As the representative of Chinese Modern Romantic poets, Hsu Chih-mo not only created a lot of popular poems, but also proposed many creative ideas and insights, which enabled us to get a glimpse of the clues of Shelley's ideological influence on him. This paper made a comparison of the literary theory of these two poets, discussed the impact of Shelley's poetics on Hsu Chih-mo, and tried to discover the underlying causes for acceptance, which was very creative in today's academia of poetry.
Ananalysis of the Research Path of Alan Badiou's Thought in China in Recent Years
LI Jian
2019, 35(2): 80-85.
Abstract(281) PDF(1)
Abstract:
There are three main approaches to the study of Badiou's whole thought in China:first, from the perspective of philosophy and its four premises, the main contents of Badiou's thought are summarized by discussing philosophy, mathematics, poetry, love and politics;the second is to start from the three key words of event, subject and truth, to sort out the relationship among the three, to summarize their value of the times;the third is to interpret communism from the radical idea of communism. In the specific meaning of ideas and actions, we attempts to give a reasonable evaluation of the idea of communism.Of course, in contrast to the three paths of studying Badiou's thought, how to evaluate and position his thoughts becomes a basic question that must be answered. In summary, although Badiou's thought was generated in a post-modern context, it cannot be called a post-Marxist, but should be grasped from a comprehensive perspective.More importantly, although Badiou's communism is a renewed update of Marx's communist theory, this update is a step back from Marx.

2019, 35(2): 86-92.
Abstract(338) PDF(3)
Abstract:
The cognitive differences exist between Chinese and English media in their perception of the Belt and Road Initiative(BRI).To understand the cognitive prominence and cultural coherence of metaphorical mapping in BRI news report, the news headlines covering BRI from Chinese and English media have been selected to conduct a contrastive analysis of the cognitive prominence constructions of the metaphorical conceptual integration hidden in different media. The empirical traces of news texts are most likely to activate embodied perceptual-motor skills, which highlights the cognitive differences from visual, auditory and kinesthetic perspectives. They provide sufficient conditions for the production, and comprehension of second language and realize the implementation of language learning in real life.
Conflicts between the Charity School and Temple Culture in Shanxi Province during the Late Qing Dynasty
NIU Bao-xiu
2019, 35(2): 93-101.
Abstract(261) PDF(1)
Abstract:
The charity school was an important component of the basic rural education system in China's Qing dynasty. The institution of the charity school gradually broke down the barriers of accessibility for China's temples, in Shanxi province during the latter part of the Qing dynasty. As a result, religious culture progressively expanded in the rural areas due to the support the government and affluent locals offered through the charity school system.Meanwhile, in the process of replacing many of the traditional functions of temples, the charity school became the most important center for public utilities in these rural areas. From many different historical examples of conflict among Chinese monks and village locals taken from Shanxi province during the late Qing dynasty, it can be seen that the development of the charity school promoted both adjustment and reconstruction in China's rural culture as well as its societal relations and modernization.
Why Artificial Intelligence Can Not Replace Human Beings?—On the Technical Essence of Artificial Intelligence
BI Cheng
2019, 35(2): 102-108.
Abstract(851) PDF(31)
Abstract:
This paper would try to response to the question why artificial intelligence cannot replace human beings, based on the understanding of the technical essence of artificial intelligence.By using historical analysis and philosophy of technology theory as the analytical tools, such as organ projection theory, I review the development history of AI technology. The general trend is that while the research of AI deepens the imitation of human intelligence, it tends to build solutions for intelligent systems by machines and humans. In practice, the relationship between human and machine is moving from “separation” to “blending”.Therefore, human beings can not only exist as the ultimate goal imitated by artificial intelligence at the essential level, but also play the intelligent function as actors of large artificial intelligence system at the individual level.Human beings would not be replaced by artificial intelligence.

Abstract(222) PDF(0)
Abstract:
It is an important issue to analyze the formation mechanism of the policy of “New engineering” construction, for the purpose to implement this policy more effectively. The formation of the policy of “New engineering” is the result of a combination of many factors.Multiple-Stream Theory is an effective tool to study the formation mechanism of this new policy.Based on Multiple-Stream Theory, this paper attempts to analyze the three streams in the formation process of the policy of “New Engineering” in China. The fact that the quality of higher-level engineering talents is not in sync with social needs and international trends constitutes the Problem Stream. The Policy Stream is constituted by the active promotion of experts, scholars and the media. The Politics Stream is the new engineering strategies of the China's government. The coverage of three streams has opened the policy window and the policy has been implemented.
