Vertical Extension Analysis of GIVE Di-transitive Construction
XIONG Xue-liang
2017, 33(5): 6-11,18.
Abstract(331) PDF(10)
Abstract:
The typological study of the di-transitive construction is horizontal while the study of the central part of the di-transitive semantic map is vertical and microscopic. A mere conclusion of the prototypical di-transitive construction in terms of the transference of some entity from the subject to the object is partial as by so doing only the concrete physical space is taken into account. Therefore, some contrastive details of the abstract use of the di-transitive verb "give" in both Chinese and English are adumbrated here.

On Chinese-into-English Translation from the Perspective of Mechanics: A Case Study of Translating Chinese Multi-clause Sentences into English
WANG Jian-guo
2017, 33(5): 19-28,42.
Abstract(373) PDF(13)
Abstract:
Based on the view from the perspective of Mechanics that Chinese is a kinetic-energy-oriented language while English a potential-energy-oriented one, this paper explains the formations of the Chinese topic-comment structure and of the English subject-predicate structure. Hence, inevitably, the Chinese topic-comment structure featuring continuity should be reorganized into the English subject-predicate structure featuring hierarchy and discreteness. With examples taken from Chapter Three of Hong Lou Meng and its two English versions, this paper formulates the tendency of reorganization in translating Chinese multi-clause sentences into English, and points out that English rewording should rely on appropriate uses of topics and often-condensed comments with view to the thematic relevance to ensure discourse fluency and balance that help the discourse acquire greater potential energy when mentally raised.
A Study of Simile Translation—With Reference to the Translation of Zhu Ziqing's Prose
WANG Xue-ming
2017, 33(5): 29-35.
Abstract(563) PDF(17)
Abstract:
Simile is one of the most fundamental and commonly used rhetorical devices, however, with the rise and development of modern studies in metaphor, the study of simile was gradually marginalized, and subsequently, that of simile translation was attached little importance as well. this study, adopting the qualitative and the quantitative methods, explores translation strategies of simile from the aspects of structure, function and type by analyzing similes selected from Zhu Ziqing's five typical works of lyric prose. The result shows that if the similes are more typical and usually serve as post-modifiers, the separation between semantic analogies are much wider, the more literal translation and image retention will be applied. On the contrary, translation methods will be much more diverse. This study aims to explicate the relationship between simile features and translation strategies and provide reference for the translation of rhetorical devices in practice.

SONG Fang-cheng
2017, 33(5): 36-42.
Abstract(458) PDF(17)
Abstract:
Previous studies on emotive communication are mainly descriptive, focusing on the emotive language used in the communicative process. Analyses are then needed to account for the pragmatic effects and functional values of this communication type. Based on the analyses of the theoretical strengths of Interpersonal Pragmatics and Appraisal Theory, this paper argues that these two theories should be collaboratively employed in analyzing emotive communication, designing a theoretical model to explore how communicators construct interpersonal relations during the process.

A Study of the Evolution of the Chinese Image Represented by Time Magazine from the Perspective of Appraisal Theory
ZHAO Yong-gang
2017, 33(5): 49-61.
Abstract(345) PDF(11)
Abstract:
There is a mismatch between China's international image and its status quo as a world power, which is, to a large extent, the result of the image projection of China by Western media headed by the American ones. The researcher searches the relational clauses attributing or identifying "China" with WordSmith tools in the sub-corpora of Time Magazine Corpus (Oct., 1949-Dec., 2007), and then analyzes the evaluation sources in these clauses referring to the attitude system and the engagement system. The findings are that the image of China is depicted by Time Magazine as very negative from 1949 to 1969, as somewhat positive in the 1970s, as slightly negative during the 1980s and the 1990s and overwhelmingly positive in the 2000s. Finally the researcher, after examining the American-Chinese relations (1949-2007), concludes that the image representation of China by Time Magazine has always been subject to the US's national interests, and that the apparent evolution of the Chinese image is in essence the result of the adjustments of America's global strategies.

Abstract(442) PDF(10)
Abstract:
The thesis inquires into how Qing emperors described the images of Fengling Islet in Yuanmingyuan by means of their poems. It was a summer resort, a heaven, and an auspicious place, and reflected the ideology of emphasizing agriculture. Those descriptions not only contained natural landscapes and personal impressions, but also invested with damp traces at that age, and loaded Qing emperors' ruling ideas.

Analysis on the Cultural Reasons behind the Establishment of the One-partyMilitary Dictatorship by Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist Government—From the Perspective of Chiang Kai-shek's Philosophy of Practice
WANG Jiu-gao, LI Ya-nan
2017, 33(5): 86-91.
Abstract(492) PDF(11)
Abstract:
Philosophy of practice was the official philosophy of the Kuomintang led by Chiang Kai-shek. Chiang Kai-shek thought that "action" has the ability to create everything and "kindness" was the original driving force of social evolution and all the revolutionary actions. Therefore, Chiang Kai-shek hoped to strengthen the moral construction of party members, cadres, the army, and the general public so as to stimulate the individual "one for all" nature, which in turn encourages the people to voluntarily participate in the revolutionary process of national rejuvenation. However, in reality, the idealized philosophy of practice not only weakened the main force for the national revolution internally, but also pushed the Kuomintang into elitism. Moreover, the act of focusing on moral values and overlooking the law on the policy level has shaken the administrative basis of the institutionalization of the Nationalist Government. The so-called "elites" did not play their roles as moral models like Chiang Kai-shek expected. Instead, because of the lack of legislation, they did whatever they wished. Thus, in the context of internal and external crises, Chiang Kai-shek's political culture did not have a strong governing power, which in the end forced him to resort to military dictatorship to maintain power.

40 Years' Argument on College Chinese—On the Name of the Course
ZHANG Ying
2017, 33(5): 102-106.
Abstract(343) PDF(8)
Abstract:
This paper reviews the tough track College Chinese has gone through since the course was reopened in China's universities and colleges and the various occurrences that took place on the course name in a nation-developing background. It is found that the weak confidence in the name reflects the inadequate cognition of the ever-changing requirements of the times in which it survives. The College Chinese circles have been unable to meet actively with the challenges, adjust themselves when needed, and go to perfection. This paper suggests that only through getting strong by itself can the course earn a loud and distinct name, and only through becoming self-strong can College Chinese play its unique and indispensable role in the rise of the Chinese nation.

CHEN Chen, CHEN Hong-wei
2017, 33(5): 111-116.
Abstract(373) PDF(9)
Abstract:
Our Country's Good is one of the representative works of Timberlake Wertenbaker, a British contemporary woman writer. This play employs the meta theatrical device of play-within-the-play to tell the story of a group of transported British convicts mangaged by Second-lieutenant Ralph Clark rehearsed George Farquhar's comic The Recruting Officer. Dramatic strategy embodies the liberation and redemption of prisoners, but in essence it is a complex and hidden cultural means of colonization. This article tries to prove that dramatic strategy still belongs to the colonial discourse of hegemonic culture from three aspects as hierarchical identity presupposed by dramatic enlightenment, the colonial effect of discipline and assimilation created by dramtic produce, and the constrcution of dramatic art to the identity of British Empire.
