English Locative-Subject Clause: Its Formation Mechanism and Intrinsic Semantic Feature of Theme
ZHANG Ke-ding
2015, 31(4): 1-8.
Abstract(308) PDF(5)
Abstract:
English locative-subject clause(ESLC)refers to clauses whose subject has the LOCATIVE role of designating the place of the state or action. In transitivity structure,ESLCmay be either relational clauses of circumstance or mental clauses, both of which are clauses of ideational grammatical metaphor. The formation mechanism of the former type involves process transfer, transfer of element function and transfer of element structure. In addition to these three kinds of transfer, the formation of the latter also involves personification.Of the transfers of the formation mechanism, process transfer is determinant. It determines the process type of the transferred clause and the transfer of element function, which in turn decides the transfer of element structure. And personification depends on whether the transferred clause is a mental relation clause or not.In thematic structure, the subject of ESLC may be regarded as unmarked Theme, which is different in nature from that of its corresponding congruent clause. The unmarked Theme of ESLC may be the point of departure of the message, but, due to its own intrinsic semantic feature of location,it cannot be what the Rheme is about, but provides a spatial location for the state or action of the Rheme.

HE Wei, LV Yi
2015, 31(4): 9-18.
Abstract(225) PDF(5)
Abstract:
Whether there is tense or not in Chinese has been widely discussed from the perspective of traditional grammar. This paper is intended to explore the Chinese tense system and its instantiation within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics, and its aim is to present a relatively comprehensive and systematic description of tense in Chinese. This study shows that there is tense in Chinese, and that tense in Chinese falls into two types—one being marked in form and the other being unmarked in form.Marked Chinese tenses are realized by grammatical,quasi-grammatical and lexical resources, and the meanings of unmarked ones can be judged from the use of Predicator in the clause. In addition, context plays a role in judging tense.
The Textual Organizing Functions of Text-final Answer-providing Questions in English Political Speeches
DU Juan
2015, 31(4): 19-25.
Abstract(338) PDF(4)
Abstract:
Answer-providing Question is a kind of question with its answer offered by the speaker, not the listener.According to the way the speaker offers the answer,it can be further divided into two subtypes:the explicit-answer-providing question(EAP question)and the implicit-answer-providing question(IAP question). The existence of IAP question in English public political speeches is the result of mutual choice and interaction between IAP question and the text type, jointly decided by their respective characteristics.IAP question can appear in different parts of the text, even appear in the conclusion part. When it is at the end of an English public political speech,as a kind of unconventional usage,Answer-providing Question has the unique textual organizing functions:when its implied answer can be inferred from previous text,it mainly has the summarizing-continuing function;when its implied answer can be inferred by common sense,it mainly has the summarizing-focusing function.

Abstract(524) PDF(10)
Abstract:
Halliday's Functional Grammar regards adverbials as Adjuncts, which are classified into circumstantial Adjuncts, modal Adjuncts and conjunctive Adjuncts.Modal Adjuncts are further divided into mood Adjuncts and comment Adjuncts.Comment Adjuncts are a kind of interpersonal Adjuncts,so they express interpersonal meaning.Such a kind of interpersonal meanings comes from the speaker, therefore it is a kind of speaker meaning. This makes it clear that comment Adjuncts are speaker-oriented in nature. The interpersonal meanings conveyed by comment Adjuncts include engagement meaning, epistemic meaning and evaluative meaning.Engagement meaning refers to the manner in which the speaker conveys the information.Epistemic meaning includes judgmental meaning and evidential meaning. The former expresses the speaker's judgment of the certitude of truth-value of the proposition, while the latter conveys the speaker's evidence to the reliability of the propositional information.Evaluative meaning refers to the speaker's evaluation of the proposition as a whole or his evaluation of the Subject's role in the propositional event. What is more important, all these interpersonal meanings are dependent on the speaker's subjective attitude towards the communicated information, therefore they embody obvious speaker's subjectivity.
