Escape from Spaces——An Example of Spatial Narration in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
-
Abstract: As a giant in American literature,Mark Twain produced in his life quite a number of famous works and The Adventures ofHuckleberry Finn stands out among them. The Adventures unfolds the details of how Huck helps Jim to escape and run to freedom by depicting their adventurous experience. The story happens against the spatial background of the angrily surging Mississippi River, along which Huck and Jim are drifting. However, the space is subject to change as they go from place to place. And the plot is unfolded by the detailed description of the two children traveling in the real and spiritual worlds to and fro.By turning to the theory of spatial narration, the present paper aims atan exploitation of the narrative characteristics of The Adventures ofHuckleberry Finn by approaching them from the aspects of topographic, psychological and social spaces so as to acquire a clear understanding of how Huck acquires his freedom by reconstructing his spiritual world in his escape from space to space.
