The Effects of Audio and Video Modalities on Business English Majors'Listening Comprehension

摘要: 文章报道了一项实验研究,考察了无字幕视频和纯音频两种不同的电影输入形式对商务英语专业学生听力理解的影响。无字幕视频和纯音频可以看作英语学习的不同模态。此外,还分析讨论了高分组与低分组学生对英文电影的视频画面和音频的依赖程度。研究结果显示:1)以画面、声音和语言多模态播放为主的无字幕视频形式对电影内容的听力理解具有辅助作用;无字幕视频和纯音频两种不同的输入形式在提高英文电影的听力理解方面具有显著差异,这与音画关联度相关。2)与高分组的学生对比,低分组学生对于电影视频画面的依赖性更强。文章还讨论了研究结果对多模态理论和应用研究的启示。Abstract: This study reports the results of an experiment and investigates the effects of different input forms of English movies (audio and video) on listening comprehension.In this study,audios and videos without subtitles of movies can be seen as different modes.Furthermore,the degrees of higher level students'and lower level students'dependencies on audio and video were analyzed.The results showed:1) multimodality, i.e.videos without subtitles but with images and sound, promoted students'listening comprehension;A significant difference was found between such different input forms of English movies as audios and videos without subtitles in their effects on listening comprehension,which is related to the degree of sound-images mapping.2) Compared with the higher level students,lower level students had greater dependency on the images of videos.The article also discusses the implications in the application studies of multimodality theory.
