Strategies for Covert Realisation of Attitudinal Meaning

摘要: 态度是评价系统的核心,但学界对其隐性体现策略缺乏深入讨论。态度评价是参照一定标准给对象赋值的过程,而隐性态度是相对于典型显性态度的偏离。基于显性态度在词汇、语法、语义、符号等各层面上的典型体现方式可以推理出态度的隐性体现策略,具体表现为各种非纯态度词汇、非归属性关系小句、介入与分级资源以及各种非象征符等资源,形成显性—隐性连续体。隐性态度在具体语境的映照得以彰显,由此实现态度评价的交际目的。Abstract: In the appraisal theory of SFL evaluation is a process whereby an attitudinal value is assigned to the target with reference to a specific criterion. Compared to the overt realisation of attitude, covert realization is still underexplored. As covert realisation can be seen as deviation from typical ways of overt realisation, with reference to the strategies for typical overt realisations we can work out the strategies for covert realisation by examining the possible ways of such deviation. These covert realisation resources include various non-attitudinal lexes, non-attributive relational processes, engagement and graduation resources and non-symbol signs, and they form a cover-overt continuum. The covert attitude will finally be manifested against a specific context, and thus contribute to the communicative purpose of attitudinal evaluation.
