Abstract: This study deals with the verbal and visual representations of poverty within the framework of mediated discourse analysis and multimodal social semiotics.Verbally, it illustrates the lexicogrammatical pattern of poverty as shown in BNC and the discourse grammar as shown in the mass media representation of the poor vulnerable.Visually, the paper elaborates the image grammar of this news report.Poverty is not just a matter of material existence for the poor people, it is also a symbolic state and human spirit that are embodied in its representations.
