Towards Cardiff Grammar’s View of Language as Program

Abstract: The theoretical system and research paradigm of Cardiff Grammar (CG) mainly originates from its view of language as program. This view postulates that language should be viewed as a process, a procedure, a program for behavior. Based on this view of language, CG has constructed a holistic and cognitive-interactive model of language and its use, which unified theoretical-generative and text-descriptive strands of the theory. This is the origin of the descriptive division between CG and Halliday’s model. The paper first states what language as program is in CG, and then specifies this view from three aspects: stratification, multi-functionality, and syntactic description. The new view of language as program in CG has opened new ways for Systemic Functional Linguistics to achieve its appliability from linguistic theory into the field of artificial intelligence, and enriched its philosophy of grammar.
