Evolutionism and Utilitarian: Interpretation of Modern Scientific Thought by Yan Fu

摘要: 严复将进化论提升和泛化为思想方法,把科学方法初步引入社会生活的各个领域;而在科学功能的理解上,他则强调社会功利主义,指明科学能够最终致中国于富强之境。严复对于近代科学思想所做的诠释对近代中国人理解西方科学思想具有启蒙作用,但也对民国初年的科学主义思潮的勃兴有一定的影响。Abstract: Yan Fu promoted and abstracted the theory of evolution as a kind of thinking method, which he preliminary put into effect in social realms. But he emphasized a utilitarian interpretation of scientific functions, which would help China to be of wealth and strength. His interpretation initiated modern Chinese to understand the modern science better,but meanwhile it led to a trend of thought called"Scientism"which happened in the 1910s.
